500+ Words Essay on Duties and Responsibilities of an Ideal Student
Student life is the seed time of life. It is free from worries and anxieties, but it has its own duties and responsibilities. A student must attend to them; otherwise, they fail in both their academic life and later life as well. “The path of duty is the way to glory,” said the poet Tennyson.
At this time, a student’s mind is like wet clay. Just as the potter moulds various pots with this clay, our minds can also be shaped in different ways, especially during this sensitive period. Hence, an ideal student should first focus on building their character, and then their career, to become a valuable member of their family and society.
The primary duty of a student is to acquire knowledge. But that knowledge should comprise not only book learning but also the all-round development of the three ‘H’s—head, heart, and hands. Only such education can truly shape a student’s character. At first, they have duties to themselves. They must form good habits and lead a disciplined life. They must obey their parents and elders at home, as well as teachers in schools and colleges. They should imbibe certain qualities such as diligence, dutifulness, patience, perseverance, honesty, truthfulness, courage, and contentment, without which true success in life cannot be attained.

Besides these duties to themselves, a student has responsibilities toward society. A large portion of our common people still suffer from poverty, ignorance, and superstition. It is the sacred responsibility of students to serve suffering humanity. In their spare time, and especially during long vacations, they should go to their neighbourhoods and teach illiterate adults the three R’s, the rules of health and sanitation, methods of scientific cultivation, etc. In times of emergency, such as floods and famine, they can actively participate in bringing relief to the sufferers. During normal times, they can organize cultural functions for poor villagers, as we know that poverty is depressing, but drudgery is killing. Thus, students can play a vital role in the society of which they are valuable members.
However, they must not dabble in active politics, which is mainly responsible for creating chaos and a vicious atmosphere in the academic arena. Students are the future citizens of a country, so they should shape their way of life in such a manner that they may contribute to the honour and glory of their country. They must remember that student life is a time of preparation for the struggles ahead—not the time for actual struggle. A student who follows these general rules is an ideal student, and they are sure to make their mark in life.
