300+ Words Essay on Students and Politics
There is no doubt about the need for political awareness among students in a democratic country like India. But the question arises whether they should have active participation in it or not. At this point, we see that though the spheres of students and politicians are different, some persons are in favour of students’ participation in politics and some others are against it.
The primary duty of a student is to study and thereby acquire knowledge and prepare himself for his future life. If a student becomes actively involved in politics and becomes a member of a political party, he is sure to devote less time to study and his future career may be ruined. The present indiscipline and unrest among students are largely due to their active participation in politics. Active politics is a dirty game full of passion, ill-feeling, and excitement nowadays. Once they are actively involved in politics, they tend to be a plaything in the hands of unscrupulous politicians who exploit them for their narrow ends. Such politicians appeal to the emotional youths because they are easily available to lengthen the size of the processions, to muster strong in the meeting ground, to utter all sorts of high-sounding catchwords, and so on. Students should be aware of such professional politicians. When India was not free, students’ participation in the national liberation struggle was justified. But in free India, the role of the students should be different. Partisan politics generates more heat than light and brings in narrowness and one-sidedness, so we should think deeply about the whole issue from an unbiased point of view.

Students, however, should not remain ignorant of politics. They should know how the governments of different countries function and how their own country is governed. They should have known the socio-political conditions of the country. They should also study the political and economic programmes of the different political parties of the country and try to form their own opinion on them by arranging debates, discussions, seminars, etc. Thus they should take notice of the cross-currents of politics of their own country and the trend of world events. But, by no means, they should become the pawns on the political chessboard.
